Spotlight on Stuart Landon and The Angels With Dirty Faces

Following on from our interview with Stuart’s manager, Charlotte Elizabeth, we thought this would be a good time to put him in the spotlight and tell you everything you need to know about one of the best male vocalists in country music!

Likened to Chris Stapleton, Stuart has a legion of loyal fans that he has built up through his many years in the music industry and the momentum is still building.

Angels With Dirty Faces burst onto the scene back in 2016 when Stuart formed the exciting group. They quickly built momentum and played festivals including FSA Fest, Middle of Nowhere and headlined the UK Country Radio Awards where they were nominated for UK Country Group of the Year.

Their debut single, ‘Shatter Like Glass’ debuted at number 4 on the country charts behind tough competition from The Shires and the 50th Anniversary song ‘Forever Country’

The song was awarded semi finalist position in the UK Songwriting Competition, was the most heard song at the top of the charts on UK Country Radio and now has recently been re-released as an acoustic version on Stuart’s EP ‘Outmanned, Never Outgunned’.

His debut solo single ‘I Can’t Take It Anymore’ went straight to number 1 on the iTunes and Amazon country music charts.

Stuart was nominated as ‘One to Watch’ for 2019 by UK Country Music and you can see why.

This year has already got off to a flying start.

We caught up with Stuart to get a little insight from him about his band, his future plans and how having management has helped his career.

Q: Stuart, your success as a solo artist and indeed as a band, Angels With Dirty Faces, has been great to watch. What makes you so successful?

I’m not really sure how you judge success. Success to me is to constantly strive to be better. Never think you are successful because if you think you have ‘made it’ then you might take your foot off the gas.
I think it’s important to just keep working hard and improving all the time. You can never stop learning.

Q: How did you choose your band members?

I have been playing music together with Neil, my bass player for a long, long time and we both decided to put the Angels together.
I’ve worked with Chris, our keyboard player on lots of different projects in the past and he is one of the best I know. He then got Jack our guitarist on board.
Danny, our drummer, is another guy we have worked with on lots of occasions in the past so it was really easy to put together and it just feels right musically.

Q: What has been your biggest achievement to date?

I think getting a number 1 single in the iTunes country charts is the pinnacle at the minute but also having other chatty success with our EP and other singles.
The EP, Outmanned, Never Outgunned has spent over 3 months in the iTunes All-Time Best Selling country charts which kind of blows me away!

Q: We interviewed your manager recently. Why did you choose Charlotte as your manager?

Well I think it was a partnership that was meant to be.
I met Charlotte at a gig and we said hello and then I got involved with her songwriting EP ‘Survive’ which gave birth to the song Shatter Like Glass which, after a couple of years, is still getting airplay all over the world so it wasn’t a bad start!
She put together the promotional radio tour herself and it impressed me how organised and hard working she was.
After that, she asked if we had a manager, I said no and then we did – Charlotte! There was no meeting as such, it just felt right. I think in this industry it’s important to trust your instinct from time to time, and on this occasion it was right.
Since then we have gone from strength to strength. She’s amazing, she works so hard and is as brave as they come, I trust her 150%.

Q: Do you think a manager is necessary to gaining success in the music industry?

I think every artist is different but what is important is that if you have a manager that you have the right one.  Your manager has to have your best interests at heart and you have to trust them. There are a lot of assholes in this industry who will take advantage.
In the same respect, there are some artists who will have a manager but they won’t work hard enough to make the managers job work.
It’s a two way street. You both have to be prepared to work together and as hard as each other in your respective roles. It’s ok to disagree, that happens but what is important is that you both have the same goals and are both prepared to sacrifice to get it.
Some artists will be successful without a manager but not many because there is so much work to do to be successful. A manager will do the work in the background that allows you to be the creative force for your music.

Q: Can we expect any new music soon?

Yeah we are working on a new album for release in the summer and we will put out a couple of extra singles before that to keep up momentum.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

Just to keep working hard and see where this journey takes us. I have no real expectations of what can or can’t be achieved. Music is life to us and you have enjoy the ups and downs because it’s all experience gained in making us better at what we do.

Blackthorn Music Festival

Blackthorn Music Festival have today announced their line up for their annual festival held at Whitebottom Farm in Stockport.

With headliners Scouting For Girls announced, the Festival takes place from 19th – 21st July with many other artists of different genres across stages.

Also taking to the stage is country artist Kezia Gill who recently returned from Australia as part of the Buckle & Boots on tour group, The Dunwells and Jess Kemp.

The organisers of the Blackthorn Festival are the same people who organise the annual Buckle & Boots Country Music Festival.

We have never been to this particular festival but this year we will be heading over to cover the weekend and we are looking forward to seeing the line up.

There are a lot of names we haven’t heard of here so it will be great to experience this to see if the organisers can fulfil that festival vibe that we are used to!

The life of an artist manager: Charlotte Elizabeth

We were told that we should chat to this girl and they described her as ‘influential on the music scene’ so we did just that.

Charlotte Elizabeth is manager to UK country artist Stuart Landon and is taking the music world by storm – not just the country scene either.

Not content with managing an artist full time, she also regularly provides talks about the music industry and motivational life coaching at universities and women in business networking events.

We interviewed Charlotte to find out more:

Q: When did you get into the music industry?

I’ve been in county music for around 6 years now but it is only in the last 3 years that i have really learnt how to get the best results. It all happened accidentally really. Music management wasn’t something that I had considered doing but when the opportunity arose, I ran with it. I do like a challenge!

Q: You speak at music conferences. What type of subjects do you talk about?

This all depends on the brief I have been given and who the audience is. I’ve spoken about music management, I’ve given advice to women who have wanted to get into the music industry but don’t know where to start. I’ve given business talks on strategy content and marketing for business growth and I’ve even discussed how to run successful music events. I am an event professional by trade so that is always my favourite talk but I love the motivational ones as well where you can talk about overcoming challenges and not letting anyone or anything stop you from doing what you want.

Q: You manage Stuart Landon. Can you tell us about him and how you met?

Stuart is a country singer, songwriter and musician from Nottingham. He is the frontman of country group Angels With Dirty Faces and one of the hardest working people I know.

I met Stuart back in 2016 when he was playing a gig at Fort San Antone in Preston. He was supporting a band that I worked with at the time which is why I was there. I had never seen him play before and didn’t know his music but safe to say, I was impressed! We didn’t say much, just a quick hello and that was all.

The musicianship of the band blew me away that night. I think once you have seen talent and skill at that level, you start to question what you are doing and you want to surround yourself with those people.

Q: Did he have a manager then?

No. He had only recently formed Angels With Dirty Faces and was getting back into the country scene.

To be fair, he came back onto the scene with a bang. He was confirmed for festivals and radio shows throughout the year and pretty much hit the ground running but he has always been a musician and had been on the country scene years prior, so he was certainly no amateur coming back into it.

Q: How did you end up managing him?

After that gig, I had put on Facebook that I was looking for another artist to collaborate with for my EP. As a songwriter, I wanted to release an EP of tracks that were to all be co-written but performed by different artists on the UK country scene. Stuart messaged me and I sent him lyrics over to what would become ‘Shatter Like Glass’. This was the first single for Angels With Dirty Faces.

He sent me a demo back of the song that night and I loved it. From the start, we had a good rapport going and we did the whole promotional tour for the single together and built up a good friendship. I think that was the base for going on to work together. It was a natural progression more than anything.

I could see how amazing the band were, how amazing Stuart’s vocal was and songwriting was and I knew I wanted to work with him. I think I may have slightly bugged him for the job!

Q: What do you think he would say about you?

Ha ha! I dread to think! I’ll leave that up to him!!

Q: There are 2 versions of Shatter Like Glass in existence now isn’t there?

Yes! The original band version is available on iTunes etc and then when we started focusing on Stuart as a solo artist, he recorded an acoustic version which he put onto his EP ‘Outmanned, Never Outgunned’

The song took on a life of its own to be honest and is still being played everywhere today!

Q: What is the best advice you have been given as a music manager?

I was in Los Angeles last year at a music conference and met Colin Lester who is the manager to Craig David. We spent some time talking and he told me “as a manager, you have to believe in your artist. As an artist, they have to trust you completely and that’s how you will end up with a long term career”

Colin was a key speaker at the conference and he really inspired me. I want to be like him.

He recently said in an interview that even if he fell out of love with the music industry, he would still manage Craig – how amazing is that! To have a bond through music that can’t be broken.

Q: What are your plans with Stuart for the next year?

We are really busy! Stuart is currently working on a new album ready for release around summer and we will put a new single out before that.

He has a really busy summer gigging. June to the end of August is pretty much fully booked.

We are heading to New York in September where he is playing Rockwood Music Hall and Texas in October.

I am also very conscious about us moving forward into the mainstream. I think it is important to put yourself in front of a new audience which is why not everything we do is country music related.

I think you can pigeon hole yourself too quickly and get stuck which isn’t productive. I am lucky in the sense that Stuart will play where I ask him to and trust me with those decisions.

We have some big support tours we are in negotiations with at the moment as well so the next 18 months – 2 years are going to be quite manic but exciting.

Q: How do you ensure you keep your artist happy to avoid them looking for alternative management?

I don’t think it is about keeping him happy as such. The music industry is hard and you are always going to have days where you don’t get on or you disagree on certain things but that’s why you need the solid friendship and trust before anything else.

A lot of business fails because you don’t have communication, loyalty or trust.

We are lucky as we are really great friends and talk almost every day. We iron out the good and the bad, we socialise as friends and I get on his nerves and bug him when I need to! It just works!

Q: As a songwriter, you released an EP called Survive. Are you planning on doing another EP or Album?

No, I don’t think so. Don’t get me wrong, that was a project that I am so incredibly proud of and so glad that I achieved it but I don’t feel the need to do another one.

I would like to co-write with Stuart again and have another single out that we have both worked on because we did so well with Shatter and we work so well together. It’s also special when you get your song cut onto an artists EP but as far as doing my own project again, I think I’ve done that now and just want to concentrate on management.

Q: What would be your ultimate goal be and your success story look like as a manager?

I would like to secure Stuart a huge support slot which would take him to the next level. I want to be able to see him play the huge arena tours and see an audience captivated by his music.

To secure a record deal, publishing deal and then his own headline tour would be fab.

And the thing is, I’m stubborn enough to believe it will happen – he just has to put up with me hounding him every day and make sure he doesn’t sack me before we get there!!!!

We hope you enjoyed this interview. Please visit our previous posts and if there is anyone you want us to talk to or any music you want us to review, email us!

Our next post will be a review on C2C and will be posted up on Thursday!

Country to Country

What is Country to Country I hear you ask?! Well, if you follow country music then I know you won’t be asking that question because there is no way you will have missed it!!

For those who don’t follow country music, Country to Country or C2C as it is lovingly known is the most popular, hottest 3 day festival of the year! Actually, 4 day if you include the Songwriters night that takes place on the Thursday before the main arena shows which are Friday to Sunday.

C2C started back in 2013 when Tim McGraw graced the stages and it has increased in popularity since.

Held at London’s O2 Arena, thousands of country music fans flock to the arena for good music, good times and lots of drinks!

This year, the headliners are Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum and Chris Stapleton.

There has been a lot of buzz about some of the other main stage acts this year, specifically Ashley McBryde and Lyle Lovatt who is very country and very popular!

Country 2 Country really does have something to suit everyone and if you don’t have tickets to the main show, you can still enjoy a wide variety of music absolutely free!

The ‘pop up stages’ are dotted around the outside concourse of the main arena and feature some of the best up and coming musicians and artists from both the UK and USA country scene.

We are excited to see Sarah Darling this year and Megan O’Neill.

We will update you on everything when we get back from having the best time ever! It really is the best weekend of the year!

Until then,

Love, Terri

Spotlight on The Adelaides

The Adelaides are a country pop trio from the West Midlands made up of Abi, Paris and Alicia.

For those who recognise a couple of the girls, you will know them from past country trio Dahlia when they were joined by Jess Roberts.

All three girls grew up in musical families and were influenced by Shania Twain, Fleetwood Mac and Dolly Parton.

Their music is heartfelt and upbeat and they are currently taking the country scene by storm.

They have recently supported Charles Esten on tour, previously played Country Music Week and this weekend are playing the pop up stages at Country to Country in London at the O2 Arena.

Despite having no music released, their following is ever growing.

They have just announced their EP will be released in summer and I for one am looking forward to this.
